Elvis is in the building

Twisters 50’s Soda Fountain on Route 66 in Williams was where I finally found out what an ice-cream soda tastes like.

Absolutely Scrumptious!   Although it’s probably better that the calorie and fat count isn’t shown on the menu!

We confidently expected ‘The Fonz’ to swagger through the door at any moment.

Elvis sang and definitely didn’t leave the building.

Cortez to Holbrook to Williams

It was a gloriously warm, sunny day when we left Cortez heading for our overnight stop in Holbrook.  Our route took us straight across the Navajo Nation, through Shiprock and onto Gallup where we joined I40.   We took this road last year and as the frontage road exit is right beside the I40 exit we had our usual ‘are you sure this is the right road?’ conversation, thankfully it was. Luckily there were no high winds along the way as while the views along this route are expansive and the skies fabulous so are the winds when they blow.

We rolled into the KOA at Holbrook http://koa.com/campgrounds/holbrook  in the early afternoon where we received a warm welcome from the owners who remembered us from our stays with them last year.   This particular KOA has a lovely outdoor pool so after a nice cool swim we headed off to Joe & Aggies CafĂ© on Route 66 for dinner where I tried a deep fried apple burrito which was absolutely delicious not to mention huge, as I didn’t take my camera there are no photographs to show you just how scrumptious it was.

The plan for the evening had been to sit outside and watch the sunset, but the sky turned black and the wind blew as a huge thunderstorm rolled in, so that put paid to that.  Even though the storm raged around us for a while very little rain actually fell in Holbrook.

After enjoying the cowboy breakfast next morning we headed off to Williams for a few days.

Mancos, Colorado, I think?

At the Mancos Renaissance Fair we entered a different world as Knights Templar put their gorgeous heavy horses through incredibly fast manoeuvres.

Knights and their Ladies strolled in the afternoon sunshine.

We weren't going to argue with these guys!

This Knight was certainly put through his paces by the little guy.

Watched a fun production of Shakespeare that I’m not sure the Bard would’ve recognised, but then again……..

From a distance, the mud show was fun, thank goodness for telephoto lenses!   The watching kids on the front row were wondering how they could join in.

We were transported to Hawaii as hula girls gave a great show, inviting everyone to join them at the end, a temptation we managed to resist, as we didn’t want to frighten the horses!

Mounted Colorado Rangers kept a watchful eye on the whole afternoon.

We drank fresh lemonade, ate homemade mincemeat and apple pie from the library stall, checked out the rest of the stalls, then emerged blinking back into the sunshine of a present day Colorado afternoon.

From Utah to Colorado

While we were in Moab we stayed at the OK RV Park, http://www.okrvpark.com/ a lovely friendly place just south of town, this summer they were dealing with an unexpected ant problem thankfully we didn’t get any in the rig.   The park was quiet and peaceful and I’m sure we’ll stay there on our next trip, one evening we watched the full moon as it rose over the La Sal Mountains, fabulous.

We also found a great butchers shop http://www.geezermeats.com/ where she makes her own tasty pork sausages, so that’s another reason to head back there.
Leaving Moab, our next stop was Cortez, Colorado where we once again stayed at Sundance RV Park http://sundancervpark.com/ for a week or so.

We spent over a month in Cortez last year and on this trip revisited several of our favourite places as well as driving down to New Mexico, where we visited Aztec Ruins and Salmon Ruins.   (See previous two blogs).
