Time flies!

In February last year, after years of research and planning and both of us retiring early, we started on our retirement adventures. As we love to visit the USA we decided that’s what we’d do and that the best way for us to enjoy our travels would be in some sort of recreational vehicle.

While trying to decide between a motorhome, a trailer or a fifth wheel, we combined holidays in Florida (obviously not a great hardship!) with the Tampa RV Supershow. The RV shows were fabulous and we did lots of ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ and ‘oh isn’t that gorgeous’ and 'would ya look at the size of this!' sometimes followed by ‘how much!!!!’ as some of the motorhomes were priced in the hundreds of thousands of Dollars. We finally decided that for us a fifth wheel and a truck would be the best option. We did lots, and I mean lots, of research and one of the best things we did was to join the Escapees RV club www.escapees.com. The Escapee forums are full of help and advice for those who want to RV either full-time or part-time.

So, twelve months on are we having fun? You betcha!

Of course we’ve had a few, ‘whose idea was this and why are we doing it?’ moments one of which could actually be right now as we’re sitting out a raging dust storm in south western New Mexico. I am soooooo glad we’re not travelling in this!

Last year we visited some fabulous places we hiked in Big Bend National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, The Grand Canyon and Ute Mountain Tribal Park. We rode the Durango Silverton Steam Railroad high into the rocky mountains, hiked around Hovenweep National Monument, Canyons of the Ancients and the mountains around Telluride, watched Native American Tribes dance at the Cultural Centre in Cortez, winced as bull riders hit the dust at a rodeo in Tombstone, sat in the sunshine and enjoyed the blue grass festival at the Courthouse in Prescott and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

So are we glad we did it? Absolutely, even though it’s been a huge and continuing learning curve and despite the fast rising price of air fares and diesel (ouch, ouch, ouch !!!!) we are having a ball.

Well, the wind advisory expires later this evening, in the meantime we’ve got a few more hours of sandblasting to get through, I am so glad we didn’t get the truck washed this morning!

Have fun, we are!
