The Painted Desert

From Williams, we moved on to Holbrook, also in Arizona. But while Williams is in the mountains and cool, Holbrook is in the desert and hot! While we were there we took I40 to exit 311 and took a trip round the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest. The colours in the Painted Desert are stark, desolate and very beautiful.

This is the start of the rugged wilderness trail, but you have to carry at least a gallon of water per day per person not to mention food and shelter.

On our last visit The Painted Desert Inn was closed for restoration, it’s now open to the public, but is no longer a working inn.

The interior is beautifully decorated.

Over the stairs leading down to a terrace there is beautiful glass ceiling etched with Indian Designs.

The original guest rooms are on the side of the building and all have a view of the Painted Desert, imagine waking up to that in the morning, what a view.

Have fun, we are!
